TYEB MEHTA Bearing Weight Featured Events
This two-day workshop on 13–14 March at KNMA Saket introduces participants to Tyeb Mehta’s modernist vocabulary and how painting communicates emotion through form rather than narrative. Instead of beginning with biography or art history, the workshop opens with sustained observation. Participants closely view selected works and note their responses through feeling, bodily sensation, and memory, shifting the focus from explanation to experience.
Building on this, Manish Pushkale guides participants in understanding how Mehta creates tension through simplified figures, strong spatial divisions, and controlled compositions. Through discussion and studio exercises, the group explores how placement, balance, disruption, scale, and intensity shape emotional impact.
On the second day, participants revisit and refine their studies, developing compositions through reworking and reflection. The concluding discussion focuses on how an image functions visually and emotionally rather than what it represents.
The workshop encourages participants to think through making and offers practical ways to engage with abstraction and develop a personal visual language. Over two days, participants strengthen observational and analytical skills, understand how tension emerges through form, and develop an original composition through guided critique.
