Decoding Modernism is a three-part workshop series that introduces families to key ideas in modern art, focusing on how artists simplified form and reimagined what a painting could be. This animation workshop explores abstraction, a major shift where artists moved beyond literal representation to express feeling through colour, rhythm, and form. Artists like Wassily Kandinsky explored how visual elements could communicate emotion directly, creating works that spoke through sensation rather than storytelling.

Drawing from these ideas and connecting them to Tyeb Mehta’s modernist approach, the workshop introduces families to how visual language can express inner experience. Through guided activities, participants will explore shapes, colour relationships, and movement to understand how mood and rhythm are built in abstract art. The experience culminates in creating a short stop-motion animation, where sequencing and motion bring abstract ideas to life.

Designed for children and adults to create together, the workshop encourages shared discovery, experimentation, and collaborative creativity.
