The internationally acclaimed and award-winning dance production ‘WITHIN’ returned to Delhi after its last showing in 2018 and twelve years after its premiere in 2013. The production is a provocation to look within ourselves, and recognise our deepest, most complex emotions and contradictions. Inspired by the thoughts of the philosopher J Krishnamurti, the mystic-poet Kabir,and Sufi poet Hazrat Shah Niaz, the production exemplified Aditi Mangaldas’ keenness towards abstraction and emotional intensity while continuing to honour the technical prowess she has inherited from her Kathak gurus, Shrimati Kumudini Lakhia and the late Pandit Birju Maharaj. Her unique movement vocabulary was magnified by a spectacular use of sound, light and costume design. The riveting live performance was complemented by a video installation created by Visioni – an Italian company specialising in the creation of immersive experiences. The installation was inspired by Aditi Mangaldas’ works and the ideas behind them, offering the audience layered insight into her enduring legacy.
