TYEB MEHTA Bearing Weight FEATURED EVENTS

Inspired by the imagery and emotional intensity of TYEB MEHTA’s works, this performance brings together dance, live music, and improvisation to reflect on aliveness, transformation, and mortality. Through recurring motifs such as Kali, the falling bird, and Mahishasura, artist Sanjukta Wagh explores the fragile relationship between life, decay, and renewal.

Drawing from TYEB MEHTA’s visual language, the performance considers what it means to be alive in a world marked by rupture, uncertainty, and change. Human, animal, and bird forms merge and dissolve through movement, creating a space where destruction and regeneration coexist, and where personal and collective experiences of loss, fracture, and impermanence are brought into dialogue.

Set within an immersive soundscape, the performance unfolds through structured improvisation, live music, and movement. As the dancer embodies figures and forms inspired by TYEB MEHTA’s paintings, audiences are invited to experience themes of tension, vulnerability, and resilience through a dynamic conversation between music and movement.

About the Artist

Sanjukta Wagh

Performer, choreographer, writer, curator, teacher, and founder of beej, Sanjukta Wagh has trained extensively in Kathak, Hindustani music, theatre, and contemporary dance. Drawing from these diverse practices, she has developed a distinctive language of dance theatre that combines classical movement with contemporary performance, literature, and live music. Her critically acclaimed work has been presented at festivals across India and internationally, and she has received numerous awards and scholarships for her contribution to the performing arts.

About the Musician

Sanjay Divecha is an acclaimed guitarist, composer, and producer whose work spans jazz, world music, film, and contemporary performance. Known for his improvisational approach and collaborative practice, he creates a live sonic environment that evolves with the movement, shaping a dynamic dialogue between music and dance.
