Theatre, Music, Queerness & Ishq!, Enchanted Walk, wepushthesky, Notion(s): In Between You and Me, Vali Vadha
Based on the theme ‘The Power of Vulnerability’ and curated by Bengaluru-based actor, director and filmmaker Kirtana Kumar, the inaugural edition of KNMA’s Theatre Festival was centred around the role of contemporary theatre in addressing current social vulnerabilities. Productions such as Talki via Bengaluru, Be-Loved: Theatre, Music, Queerness and Ishq! and Project Darling unravelled emerging discourses around sexuality, while performances such as wepushthesky, Bhaagi Hui Ladkiyaan and Nazar ke Saamne foregrounded personal narratives that threw light on how identity comes to be influenced by religion, gender, location, class and caste. The festival included Enchanted Walk, an interactive site specific puppet installation created by The Katkatha Puppet Arts Trust. Forms such as Beesu Kamsale and Yakshagana, traditionally considered ‘folk’ provoked reflections on culture and contemporaneity. In the same vein, a curated workshop, lecture demonstration, and symposium created a charged space of discussion wherein performance theorists like Anuradha Kapur, Dr Brahma Prakash and Amanda Culp engaged with students and practitioners to share diverse perspectives on contemporary theatre.
