‘From the Earth we are, and to the Earth we go’ is the idea encapsulated by Elemental You, which is an invitation to ponder how humans interact with and are affected by the world they inhabit.

Eons, eras, periods, epochs, days, and decades are slowed down to navigate this exhibition, which explores the three artists’ uniquely nuanced politics of being and becoming, embodying and effacing.

The exhibition is a deliberate attempt at slowing down time, almost to a lull, oscillating between languidness and stuckness. The audience is invited to engage with the artist, almost like an archaeologist, as a looker, digger, and archivist, to explore how we inhabit, influence, and are influenced by the environment around us.

Simryn Gill has used the backdrop of her hometown of Port Dickinson, Malaysia, to demonstrate the complex relationships between geographies, tourism, local and global, as she dresses up models with cultural cliches of the region like exotic tropical fruits. Neha Choksi compels us to reconsider our relationship with the elemental forces that chisel our being to shape us – as active participants in our lives and bodies through stone sculptures. Hajra Waheed’s practice observes the invisible web of forces in an increasingly globalised yet fragmented world. It encourages a deeper understanding of the ways in which our histories are intertwined with those of others.

A mixed-media exhibit in the truest sense, the artists use photographs, drawings, and videos and create sculptures from natural materials to demonstrate the chaos and order in the unfolding drama of human existence.

The exhibition also features an Artists’ Roundtable with five artists and artist-duos who will converge on the idea of immersion, repetition, field visits, landscape, record-taking, rubbings, and other methods of exploring the world we inhabit, and conversations on time as a unit to measure life.
