Brand Story
Shapers of Culture

KNMA is a new cultural institution of – and for – the 21st century.

Established by the eponymous art collector, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) opened its doors to the public in January 2010 as India’s first private museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art.

The magnificent, ever-growing collection of KNMA highlights an extraordinary generation of 20th-century Indian artists and painters. The spirit and culture of India are embedded into the museum’s very heart, its ethos, and its vision.

The upcoming KNMA structure will bring together visual and performing arts, educational outreach, scholarship, and practice, while continuing to build and conserve one of the most significant South Asian art collections in the world. Envisioned as a vibrant meeting ground, it will serve as a space where both established and emerging voices in art can thrive under one roof.

A museum with multiple offerings; KNMA is a live, constantly changing, reactive, moving entity which never stops evolving. KNMA intends to exemplify the dynamic relationship between art and culture through its exhibitions, publications, educational and public programmes, and more.

Illuminate with Light and Shadow
Through a meticulously crafted design system, the identity employs visual subtleties that not only complement but elevate KNMA’s distinctive and bold expression.
The new visual identity is anchored by a bespoke typeface, drawing inspiration from the architectural geometry while embodying the essence of both tradition and modernity.
KNMA’s bold new colour palette uses four main vibrant colours (Deep pink, Pistachio, Indigo, and Saffron). These celebratory colours aim to reflect the vividness of local traditions and the diverse cultural landscape.
The new visual identity draws inspiration from architectural forms and the thinking behind the newly designed building by Adjaye Associates.

The dynamic new visual identity references architectural forms and thinking behind the new building, designed by world-renowned practice Adjaye Associates, highlighting the geometric archways and lattice Jali structures. When light shines through the Jali they cast geometric patterns across the stone of the building. The identity visualises this interplay between solid architectural elements and shifting geometric shapes.

Our primary font, “KNMA Zubtrak”, is a stencil serif characterised by angularities and diamond shapes that echo the architectural motifs of the building and the shapes of our logo. The stencil cutouts subtly reference the apertures of the Jali windows and the shadows that they cast.

Other brand assets include a diamond lattice pattern, that shifts and ripples in motion, creating a contrast between structure and fluid movement. Our bright palette of colours expresses the vibrancy and energy of India’s capital city, drawing inspiration from the cultural references and richness of the arts of the region. The overall identity is a further expression of India’s rich art history and future talent.
