Our Story

KNMA stands at the confluence of art, culture, and history across the Indian modern and contemporary realms. Showcasing the prized collections of Mrs Kiran Nadar, the museum hosts several critically acclaimed artists alongside workshops, art appreciation discourses, symposiums, and public programs showcasing the rich heritage of the performing arts and culture of India.

The New Museum

A culmination of years of curatorial direction and research, the new museum set to launch over the next few years, will be the largest cultural centre in South Asia. With its state-of-the-art architecture, the museum aims to serve as a world-class cultural hub and a space for diverse conversations. The vision for the new space is to preserve cultural treasures, nurture artists, and bridge the gap between art and the public.

A new era of art! With its new state-of-the-art building, KNMA emboldens the rise of Contemporary Indian Art, introducing a groundbreaking cultural destination for India and the global arts landscape.
This Center will be a cultural powerhouse open to all, furthering the founder’s vision of making art accessible to everyone.
A million square feet in size, the new museum will house a much larger collection of art and host diverse art forms in its state-of-the-art auditoriums!
Timeline
2010

In Jan, KNMA’s first museum in Noida opened to the public with the inaugural exhibition “Open Doors”.

2011

KNMA extended its presence with the new Saket museum, opening with the inaugural exhibition “Time Unfolded”.

2012

Two major productions took place in Saket with Crossings (a collaborative initiative with esteemed artists Bharti Kher, and Reena Banerjee) and Line of Control (a 100-ton installation by Subodh Gupta).

2013

KNMA Saket hosted “Difficult Loves”, an all-women artist exhibit with Amrita Sher-Gil, Nasreen Mohamedi, and seven contemporaries.

2014

The Offsite project, “Oneric House”, took place at 24 Jor Bagh. It was a collaborative initiative with the Gujral Foundation featuring Sonia Khurana.

2015

KNMA marked its fifth-anniversary milestone with the opening of the show “Constructions”, featuring a panel of esteemed artists whose works dot the halls of the museum even today.

2016

A monumental exhibition of Nasreen Mohammedi’s work marked KNMA’s first collaboration with the Met Museum (MET Bruer).

2017

As a symbol of support, KNMA hosted an exhibition spotlighting progressive group artists like MF Husain, SH Raza, and FN Souza. Fresh collaborations with the Kerala Museum and Muse’ Gumet, Paris, also took place.

2018

The experimental exhibition, Amrit Kalash, showcased the breadth of Tanjore paintings and helped increase the reach of the museum.

2019

KNMA exhibited across the globe with 10 displays at iconic locations. Representing India at the Venice Biennale, KNMA curated and led the India Pavilion (one of Financial Times’s top five pavilions).

2020 / 2021

Marking its tenth anniversary, KNMA expanded its digital presence with the Art X series, online competitions, and exhibitions. Despite the pandemic and temporary closure, the museum stayed committed to making art accessible globally through digital initiatives and virtual exhibitions.

2022

Relaunching after the COVID-19 outbreak, KNMA shifted its mission from promoting art enthusiasm to fostering a museum-going culture. The museum reopened with the Atul Dodiya show and a diverse range of events and activations.

2023

KNMA developed new IPs and shows to reach younger generations, including #weekendsatknma, Art Hours, and Artist Talks. The shows, Pop South Asia, Very Small Feelings, and Mirror Maze, brought in some of the highest footfalls ever observed.

2024

KNMA unveiled a refreshed identity inspired by its upcoming museum. It hosted 10 exhibitions and showcased its collection in Kolkata, Mumbai, New York, Yorkshire, and Barbican, including an immersive M.F. Husain experience at Venice. Expanding its cultural reach, KNMA launched its first-ever Theatre Festival, fostering art and dialogue.

Location
Currently, KNMA has one museum in Saket, with a former location at Noida now closed. A new museum is coming soon near Aerocity.
