TYEB MEHTA Bearing Weight FEATURED EVENTS

Critical Material is a two-day workshop led by artist Smita Urmila Rajmane, conceived in response to the ongoing exhibition TYEB MEHTA Bearing Weight (with the lightness of being). Bringing together readings, presentations, discussions, and collaborative making, the workshop invites participants to engage with contemporary artistic practice while using the exhibition as a space for reflection, dialogue, and inquiry.

Centred on the idea of criticality, the workshop explores how artworks can be observed, interpreted, questioned, and discussed from multiple perspectives. Through close engagement with the exhibition and collective conversations, participants will examine how critical thinking can deepen artistic practice, open up diverse interpretations, and contribute to broader cultural conversations.

Alongside readings and presentations, participants will collaborate to create zines, postcards, maps, and other printed material in response to the exhibition. These collective making exercises encourage participants to translate ideas into tangible forms while exploring publishing and artistic production as tools for sharing knowledge and engaging wider audiences.

Open to current Bachelor’s and Master’s students, as well as recent graduates (2025 and 2026) from all disciplines, the workshop welcomes participants interested in contemporary art, critical inquiry, and collaborative learning. Participation is free, and selection will be based on applications.
