A conversation exploring how the body emerges as a site of memory, vulnerability, violence, and resistance in the practices of TYEB MEHTA and Nalini Malani.

TYEB MEHTA Bearing Weight FEATURED EVENTS

This conversation brings together Roobina Karode, Artistic Director and Chief Curator, KNMA, and Srinivas Aditya Mopidevi, Curator, KNMA, to reflect on the central role of the body within the artistic practices of Tyeb Mehta and Nalini Malani. Through a comparative lens, the discussion explores how both artists engage the body as a site of memory, violence, vulnerability, transformation, and resistance.

Drawing from the curatorial processes behind TYEB MEHTA Bearing Weight (with the lightness of being) at KNMA Saket and Nalini Malani’s exhibition at Magazzino delle Sale, Venice, the conversation examines how the body recurs across painting, drawing, film, and installation. It considers how personal, historical, and political realities are expressed through images and representations of the body.

The session offers audiences an opportunity to engage with the curatorial research, observations, and questions that emerged while working closely with the practices of two of the most significant figures in modern and contemporary Indian art.
