TYEB MEHTA Bearing Weight FEATURED EVENTS
Decoding Modernism is a Saturday Family Workshop series introducing families to key ideas in modern art, exploring how artists simplified form, reduced colour, and redefined what painting could be. Each session focuses on a distinct modernist approach through discussion and hands-on exploration.
In its second session, the workshop explores reduction and non-representation, inspired by Kazimir Malevich’s White on White and other modernist experiments that moved away from imagery. Participants are encouraged to consider how texture, surface, and subtle variation can carry meaning when colour and recognisable form are reduced.
Working with a limited white palette, participants will experiment with layering and texture to create a monochromatic surface. Through repetition and careful placement, they will observe how small shifts in tone, thickness, and material presence shape an expressive composition.
This approach connects to Tyeb Mehta’s modernist restraint, where reduced colour, flat planes, and controlled composition intensify emotional impact. By slowing down and paying close attention to material, participants explore how meaning can emerge through reduction and sustained focus. Families will leave with a monochromatic mixed-media artwork created together and a deeper understanding of how limitation can sharpen visual awareness.
