TYEB MEHTA Bearing Weight FEATURED EVENTS

Led by artist Shashikanta Mohanty, this workshop explores collage as a critical artistic practice that responds to moments of social disillusionment and unrest. Drawing connections between Tyeb Mehta’s response to post-partition violence and the figure of the “angry young man” in Indian parallel cinema of the 1970s and 80s, the session reflects on how artists and filmmakers translated collective tension into powerful visual languages.

Beginning with an artist-led discussion, participants will be introduced to the historical contexts and visual strategies shaping both Mehta’s work and Indian parallel cinema. They will then create their own collage using visual fragments, experimenting with sharp breaks, diagonals, and flat planes of colour inspired by Mehta’s use of tension and fragmentation.

Designed for participants interested in deeper artistic inquiry, the workshop encourages reflection, experimentation, and critical engagement.

Artist Bio:
Shashikant Mohanty (b. 1994, Odisha) is an emerging visual artist whose work explores architecture and personal space within social and political contexts. His practice reflects on how built environments shape human experiences and shift across time and situations.

He completed his BVA in Painting from Government College of Art and Crafts, Khallikote, Odisha (2017), and an MFA in Painting from the University of Hyderabad (2021). Mohanty is currently based in Vadodara, where he practices under the guidance of artist Natraj Sharma.

He has participated in several residencies, including Shores of Serenity II at Dot Line Space Art Foundation, Chilika (2024), Space Studio Summer Residency, Vadodara (2022), and Sanna Art Residency, Hyderabad (2021). His work has been featured in multiple group exhibitions across India, including shows in Vadodara, Goa, Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Bhubaneswar. He has also taken part in various workshops and artist camps organized by institutions such as Lalit Kala Academy.
